Section 02
Getting Started: Login & Navigation
Signing in with an appliance account, roles, and finding your way around the console.
Signing in
The console opens to the LUCIEN sign-in screen (titled ISM Appliance Console) with Username and Password fields and a Sign in button.
You sign in with an appliance account: the same Unix account that exists on the appliance itself. Credentials are checked against the appliance via PAM; there is no separate console password to manage. A successful sign-in creates a session that lasts 8 hours, after which you sign in again.
Roles
Your role is derived from the appliance, not chosen at login:
| Role | Who | What they can do |
|---|---|---|
| Administrator | Members of the lucien-admin group |
Full control: change configuration, start/stop services, edit policies, manage keys |
| Viewer | Every other valid account | Read-only: can see all pages but cannot make changes; mutating actions are refused |
Roles and profile details are managed on the appliance (group membership), not from the console. To grant someone Administrator access, add their account to the
lucien-admingroup on the appliance.
Getting around
A fixed sidebar on the left lists the main pages, in order: Dashboard, Security Lab, Policies, Users, Reports, Radio, VoIP, System, TLS Intercept. At the bottom of the sidebar is your profile (the lucien avatar); its menu is where you reach Settings and sign out.
Throughout the console the same rule applies: Administrators see active controls; Viewers see the same information with the controls disabled.
